  • Notes
    • s/o John HERBERT & Dorothea
      b/o Elizabeth (HERBERT) WHITE CORWIN

On 26 June 1635, John Harbert, a shoemaker from Northampton, aged 23, was listed as one of the prospective passengers to New England on the ship Abigail. Of the three John Herberts known to be living in Northampton at the time, only one was aged 23: John Herbert, baptized 1 November 1612 in All Saints parish, Northampton, the son of John and Dorothea (_______ Herbert and the brother of Elizabeth (Herbert) (White) Corwin.

He was granted a half-acre plot "in the neck." The grant must have soon been increased, for a list of land owners believed to date from 1637 mentions him as single and holding two acres. At a town meeting on the 16th day of the 5th month [July] 1638, John requested additional land; it is not clear if his request was granted.

In 1640, "Mr Jn° Herbert" requested the grant of a farm and was soon given 50 acres and permitted to acquire the land of John Harris.[6] In 1642, John Herbert and John Smale were sued by John Gedney and Thomas Weeks.
On 1 August 1646 John was one of a party taking inventory of the estate of John Thorne.
At some time in the early 1650s, John's wife Mary was a patient of Doctor John Winthrop Jr.
While originally a shoemaker, once in New England John Herbert apparently became a seaman. His estate included a ship, and his handling of a cargo was the subject of a letter from William Pead to Gov. John Winthrop,
By 1652, John Herbert had moved to Southold, Long Island, where he witnessed the purchase of Shelter Island on 23 March 1652.
He acted as Southold's agent at meetings of the General Court of New Haven Colony in 1653 and 1655.
He witnessed the will of James Haynes or Hindes on 1 March 1652 and acted on behalf of the estate in the New Haven Colony General Court in 1656.
At the same time, John Herbert also represented the estate of an Indian named Robin.
While all this activity shows that John was a resident of Southold, it was not until 1656 that he sold his original half-acre lot in Salem, and records are unclear as to whether he still held land in Salem at his death.
A letter from Rev. John Davenport to John Winthrop dated 4 August 1658 noted that John Herbert was gravely ill, and he had died by early September 1658, when his estate was inventoried in Southold. The estate included a vessel of 12 tons with rigging worth £80, a house, barn, and orchard (£30), various livestock, and household effects including guns and swords. The total was £241 19s. The inventory was presented to the New Haven General Court of 28 May 1660 by his widow, "Mrs. Mary Herbert," who was given administration. [1, 2]
