  • Notes
    • Geoffrey and Matilda's marriage took place in 1128. The marriage was meant to seal a peace between England/Normandy and Anjou. She was eleven years older than Geoffrey, and very proud of her status as empress dowager (as opposed to being a mere countess). Their marriage was a stormy one with frequent long separations, but she bore him three sons and survived him.
      ——
m1 Henry V, King of the Romans in Jan of 1114. Matilda was 8 and Henry was 24. Matilda and Henry had no children, and when Henry died in 1125, the crown was claimed by Lothair II, one of his political enemies.
      ——
Her younger brother, William Adelin, died in the White Ship disaster of 1120, leaving no male heir to the throne. So her father married her to Geoffrey of Anjou and gave her the throne, leading to the Civil War (The Anarchy). This was challenged, and she never was formally declared Queen of England. Her eldest son eventually succeeded to the throne, and she settled in Normandy. [1, 2]
