  • Notes
    • John Jones Thomas was born in Wales on Feb 8, 1824. He married a girl named Mary and they emigrated from Wales to America, settling in Michigan where she died at child birth. After her death John went to Council Bluffs, Iowa to catch a wagon train getting ready to head west.

He was to be in charge of the wagons of William Owen Davis. During this journey Mr. Davis died of cholera on the way to Utah. John Jones Thomas married his widow, Elizabeth (Charles) Davis. They settled with her children in Utah. While in Utah they had four more children; Margaret “Maggie”, Sarah Ann, Rachel, & John Isaac Thomas.

John Jones Thomas moved on and took his family to Montana by ox teams. John & Elizabeth were the first white family in West Gallatin Valley, near Bozeman, MT in the spring of 1863. John Jones Thomas was a peace maker with the Indians.

In 1869 John Jones Thomas again moved his family westward to Oregon. They settled south of Liberty, Oregon. Elizabeth died here in 1886 and is buried in Salem, Oregon at the Pioneer Cemetery.

After her death, John Jones returned to Montana and was married one more time to Pauline Sutton. At the time of his death, his property in Oregon was willed to his children and divided leaving 33 acres to each of the daughters and 66 acres to the son. [1]
