  • Notes
    • George and his wife migrated to North Carolina in 1729 to avoid the Quaker persecution in MA. initially this land was held by Lords Proprietors and their descendants who were recipients of this land as a gift from the King.

George Sutton died at the age of 56 on his birthday April 12, 1669 in Albemarle County, Perquimans Dist, North Carolina. Note: There are no records showing his middle name as “Ambrose.”
      ——
Sailed from Sandwich, Kent, England in 1634 on the ship Hercules & settled in Scituate, MA. Listed on ship’s manifest as servant of Nathaniel Tilden.

About 1668, after Plymouth Colony enacted penal laws against the Quakers, George Sutton immigrated to North Carolina with most of his family to escape religious persecution. He died in what is now Perquimans Co, NC within a year of leaving Massachusetts.

He was a planter in Scituate from Mar 5, 1638/39 to 1643. He was also a town officer. He had lands laid out on 1st Herring Brook. His house was near John Daman's at the SW end of Greenfield Lane where it unites with the Driftway. He and his family were Church of England until sometime after 1650 when he and his family pursued the Quaker Faith. In 1668 he emigrated to Perquimans, NC because of Quaker persecution in Massachusetts. All of his family went except Daniel who went to Burlington, West Jersey and William, who went to Eastham, MA and then Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ
      ——
On 4 December 1638, “George Sutton” was one of eight Scituate men “presented for receiving strangers & foreigners into their houses & lands, without license of the Governor or Assistant, or acquainting the town of Scittuate therewith” (annotated in the margin “all discharged 5th month, 1638, [1639] by the Court”}[PCR 1:106].
On 18 January 1643/4, “Georg[e] Sutton of the same [Scituate], planter,” was surety for James Till [PCT 2:68].
John Sutton of Scituate was not a son this immigrant, but of JOHN SUTTON [NEHGR 91:61-65].

No records for George Sutton and his family have been found in Plymouth Colony after 1654 [PCR 7:129]. About that time, George Sutton was already showing some knowledge of Virginia. Another passenger on the Hercules, William Hatch, son of William Hatch [1635, Scituate] [GM 2:3:241-44], made his will on 13 September 1653, describing himself as “of Scittuate … being upon a journey to Virginia”; one of the witnesses was George Sutton, who testified that “I received this of William Hatch sign and sealed and he told me it was his own act and deed” [PCPR 2:44; Joseph Neal And 118].
Note: Thomas HATCHE (5077) is his wife’s Grandfather.

ASSOCIATIONS: George Sutton was almost certainly closely related to SIMON SUTTON , also a passenger on the Hercules and also a servant to NATHANIEL TILDEN (1635, Scituate}. [1, 4]
