  • Notes
    • Leo Bertram , commonly known as Bertie Betts married Mary Fox Davis in Ellsworth Maine in 1910. They lived there until some time prior to January 1920 , when their fifth child Sylvia was born in Farmingdale Maine (near Augusta) While living there Bertie worked for the R. P. Hazzard Shoe Co.

I presume that it was through this company that he made contact with the Kinney Shoe Company, whom he worked for in Harrisburg, Pa at their warehouse and then was assigned to corporate headquarters in New York City, at which time we lived in Mt. Vernon N. Y. He subsequently became a retail store manager for Kinney in Norristown, Pa. where we lived until the Fall of 1930, when he lost his job due to the depression and moved his family back to Maine where his mother had a home on Deer Isle. There he became a Maine coast fisherman, just barely eking out a living for his big family.

Just prior to his 60th birthday he went to work for Pitney Bowes in Stamford, CT. This job became available with the help of Eugene Titsworth, who was married to his daughter Sylvia. This proved to be a most fortunate move for Bertie and his wife, because he only lived another two years and company benefits at Pitney Bowes permitted Mary to live comfortably for the twenty years she outlived Bertie.
