  His birth date is based on his son's year of birth. John Carleton of Brandesburton, East Riding, Yorkshire, was probably the s/o Thomas, recorded as "Thomas Culton" of Beeford in subsidies of 1523-4. The name is not found in later subsidies, although it is certain that families of that name were living in the area. It is well known that sometimes these subsidy lists contained merely a few names of representative inhabitants, and were by no means a complete census. It is also suggested that there were perhaps numerous tax evasions then as now. The fragmentary records indicate only two children for the John Carleton family.
