  • Notes
    • Osgood for a quarter of a century before 1810 was the leading teacher of
mathematics and navigation in Boston, Suffolk Co., Ma His was the school
of the day for instruction in navigation and in the art of map construction.

Osgood enlisted 2 May 1758 in the company of Captain Aaron Fay, Colonel
Ebenezer Nichols, and served seven months for the "Reduction of Canada."
His residence was given as Litchfield. While residing in Woburn 6 April
1759 he was attached to the regiment of Colonel Eleazer Tyng, under the
command of Jeffry Amherst for the invasion of Canada. On 1 January1760
he enlisted as a private in the company of Joseph Newhall, Colonel Jacob
Bayley, then stationed at Louisburg. He was discharged 20 December1760.
It was while rendering service in the army of Nova Scotia his talent for
mathematics and his skill at original work was recognized. He was made
part of the working force among the navigators and artillerists of the
King's army and navy. For five years he was under the tutelage of
Major-General John Henry Bastide in the provinces and on the high seas.

At the outbreak of the war for Independence he was a patriot. He was
present at Bunker Hill, where his brother David was killed. During the
first year of the war he was a sergeant in the company of Captain John
Wood, Colonel Paul Dudley Sargent and in 1776 the quartermaster of the
16th Continental Infantry. Afterwards he served as a Lieutenant. His
physique was such that he could not endure the hardships of campaigns,
and he was assigned to the Corps of Invalids. During the later part of
the war he was assigned to carry dispatches between Boston and
Philadelphia, and in carrying money for the treasury of the Continental
Congress, or to paymasters in the field.

Osgood constructed maps of Boston in 1795. The copper plates of these
maps in 1801 were placed in the custody of the Ma Historical
Society. His map of the district of Me was issued in 1795. The map of
Ma was issued before 30 January 1798. In 1810 he published
"Practice of Arithmetic" which was widely used at the time.
he was attached to the regiment of Colonel Eleazer Tyng, under the
command of General Jeffry Amherst for the invasion of Canada.
he enlisted as a private in the company of Captain Joseph Newhall,
Colonel Jacob Bayley, then stationed at Louisburg.
and was at the battle of Bunker Hill, where his brother David was killed.
One of the other '"Osgood facts" is that he had a student in Boston whose
name was Robert B. Thomas of "The Farmers Almanac." Mr. Carleton taught
him how to make almanacs and indeed made the calculation for the first
Farmers' Almanac himself. The story is told that everything was finished
and ready for the printer except the weather predictions, and Mr.
Carleton told his daughter, a lively girl of sixteen, that she might add
them. In a spirit of mischief she predicted a thunder storm in January
and a snowstorm in June. When the book was printed, Mr. Carleton
reproached his daughter for having ruined the venture, but as it
happened, a thunder storm did come in January and one morning in June the
girl arose and found flakes of snow falling. She called her father to
see. The reputation of the Farmers' Almanac was made for all time. He was
also a cunning hunter and trapper.
