Luce's stone is a large granite stone carved like a cannon with an anchor in front. —— Obituary: Source: The Courier Gazette, Rockland, Knox Co., Me,Tuesday, December 11, 1894. Deaths: Luce - South Thomaston, Dec. 6, Capt. William H. Luce, Collector of Waldoboro Customs District, aged 55 years, 2 months, 5 days. —— Knox County is called upon to mourn the loss of a very prominent citizen this week in the death of Capt. Wm. H. Luce of South Thomaston, Collector of Customs for the District of Waldoboro. Capt.Luce has been a sufferer from a complication of troubles, principal among them being Bright's disease, for about a year. Last Summer he was thought to be upon his death bed but recovered so as to be about and even to attend to the affairs of his office. A few weeks ago he was again taken seriously ill and failed rapidly. His marvelous constitution asserted itself through his entire sickness and it was finally Thursday afternoon when the end came. Capt. Luce's life has been mostly spent at sea. He went before the mast at the age of 17 years and finally became commander of the barkentine Ocean Eagle which was afterwards seized during theRebellion. He was placed in command of the Newburyport which was purposely sunk at the entrance of Charlestown Harbor. Later he became mate of the Vanderbilt steamship Ocean Queen and sailed for NewOrleans where he recovered the Ocean Eagle. He made many and successful voyages in her and finally disposed of three-fourths of the vessel to Boston parties. Still later he commanded successively the Rockport barks P.J. Carleton and Monhegan. Finally retiring from the sea he bought the fine residence which his family occupies in South Thomaston. He took an active interest in politics and has been a prominent Republican worker in country and state circles of late years. He was appointed collector in January,1891, took his seat two months later and has made the WaldoboroDistrict a capable and painstaking official. Capt. Luce's home life was one of calm serenity, entertaining with a hospitality that made his guests fortunate in his acquaintance. He married in 1865 to Eliza W. [sic] Carleton of Rockport, by whom two children were born: William, in business at Rockport, and Hattie who lives at home. Capt. Luce was a member of Rockland Lodge, F. & A. M.Upright and generous to a fault he will be everywhere sincerely mourned. The funeral occurred Sunday Afternoon and although the deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity, it was by special request private. The attendance was a large one, embracing the late collector's fellow townsmen and friends throughout the county. The deputy collectors of the Waldoboro District were also present. Rev. J. H. Parshley and C.W. Bradlee of this city and Rev. H. B. Woods of Rockport officiated and eloquent and deserved eulogies were paid the deceased. The remains were brought to this city and laid at rest in Achorn Cemetery. —— Achorn Cemetery Lot Stone reads: ELIZA dau. of Andrew G. & Rebecca S.
