      ——
"Philip was the first colonial governor of New Jersey, having been appointed in 1664 by the lords proprietors, one of whom was his fourth cousin, Sir George Carteret. He arrived at New Jersey in 1665 and founded Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth). He tried to attract emigrants from the New England colonies by publicizing among them the liberal concessions granted by the proprietors of New Jersey. Except in 1673 and 1674, when the western part of New Jersey was held by the Dutch, he was governor of the entire colony until it was divided into East Jersey and West Jersey in 1676. From 1676 until his death, he was governor of East Jersey. His brother Peter de Carteret was colonial governor of North Carolina." --Evelyn Beran
      ——
In "Elizabethtown & Union County: A Pictorial History" by Aquilina, Koles, and Turner (1982) p.17, next to a picture it says: Capt Philip Carteret landed at the new English settlement in August 1665. He was sent to the New World by his cousin and patron, Sir George Carteret of the Isle of Jersey...Capt Carteret named the new community Elizabethtown [New Jersey] in honor of Sir George Carteret's wife...."
Another picture caption reads: "Lady Elizabeth Carteret for whom Elizabethtown [New Jersey] was named. Her cousin, Gov Philip Carteret later married Elizabeth Smith Lawrence, a widow, who also was called Lady Elizabeth Carteret. After Carteret's death [1682/83], the American Lady Carteret married Richard Townley and founded a long line of descendants."
