  • Notes
    • Rogers was a renegade seaman or servant of Trelawny, who had settled at Kittery, across the river from Strawberry Bank. This ignominious Lotharian adventure with Mary Bachiler was punished in March, 1651, by the Court at York, which sentenced Rogers to be flogged, and the erring wife, after her approaching delivery, to be whipped and branded with the letter "A," the "Scarlet Letter" of Hawthorne's romance.
York Co. Rec., Court at Gorgeana, March 11, 1651.
      ——
George was married once before and had 3 children. He was widowed when he met Mary Baily, and it seems they were making plans to marry.
After the trial, George was whipped 39 times and ordered to leave town and never come back. His children were taken to live with his neighbors. [2]
