  He was 35 years old when he left Maine for Minnesota. He had an 80 acre farm at Zimmerman, Sherburne, MN, about 10 Miles south of Princeton, MN. This is where the family lived in the summer and grew vegetables for the winter. Made enough money managing lumber camps during winters in the Aitkin area & at Mike Drew Brook to buy a Hotel in Princeton, Minnesota, April 1879. They ran it for boarders and transients till 1899. In the June 1870 census of Elk River Station, Sherburne, MN, he is listed as a farmer with $800 real estate and $600 in personal property. He was of fair complexion with wavy hair and a nice singing voice, he sang in the Church Choir in Brownville.
