  Herbert's parents moved to Erving when he was about five years old and he grew up in various rented homes there except for a short time that the family lived in Orange. His mother died when he was seventeen, and after his father's remarriage the family went to live on Northfield Mountain.There he met Addie Leonard and they married in 1875. In the 1880 census, Herbert and Addie with daughter Ava were living in Erving, but they had been in Northfield when Ava was born, and were also there when Gertie came along in 1884. By 1889, Herbert had completed the house he was building in Erving and they moved there to stay. The house is still in the family, currently (November 1997) owned by Gertie's daughter-in-law, Celina Hastings. Herbert was employed at the chair shop in 1880 and remained there until it burned in 1917. He then helped rebuild the shop, but his granddaughter, Veva, thought that he retired about this time so he may not have worked there again. He was very active in the Erving Congregational Church and served many years as deacon. As was typical for the time, the family kept a cow and chickens and raised a garden to supplement the table. Herbert also kept some homing pigeons, apparently as a hobby. He lived just long enough to celebrate his 58th wedding anniversary and just short of his 82nd birthday.
