    • d/o Edwin BROOKS & Mary ADAMS
      ——
Edwin Brooks had been born in Irasburg or Albany, VT in June of 1851 to James and Jane (Richardson) Brooks. Little is known of his family, and by the 1860 census he was living in a foster home. A known brother, Charles, was living in a different household as were two young Brooks girls who may have been sisters. Charles married in Putney, lived there for some years, then moved to Brattleboro as well. Charles and his family are buried in the same lot at Morningside Cemetery as Edwin, Mary and their sons. When Edwin married the eighteen year old Mary Adams in Charlestown in 1884, he gave his age as twenty eight although he was actually thirty three.

Mary Elvira Adams was from an old New Hampshire family. The oldest daughter of John Loren and Ellen (Prouty) Adams, her parents, grandparents, and even some of her great grandparents had grown up in theWalpole - Charlestown - Langdon area. Her father and her grandfatherAdams were both Civil War veterans. Although not exceptionally prosperous, her parents and their families were respected members of the community. Mary grew up with two brothers, a sister, and surrounded by many aunts, uncle, and cousins.

When Fannie was born, she already had one brother, George. She was followed by brothers Clarence and Bill. All the children were born in Charlestown, but by the 1900 census the family was living in Bellows Falls, VT where Ed Brooks was employed as a stationary engineer. That career seems to have involved factory maintenance and fixture or tooling design, sort of an early version of an industrial engineer and definitely without college training. Even Clarence and Bill worked for a box manufacturer in Bellows Falls as early as 1910 even though they were still teenagers.

Why they left in 1911 and moved to Brattleboro is unclear but probably had to do with employment. In Brattleboro, Ed worked for S. A. Smith, a manufacturer of stepladders and for Felch & Pier, a chair manufacturer, before being forced into an early retirement by illness. Fannie also went to work, listed as a domestic in the 1911 and 1912 city directories. George had apparently struck off on his own for a while and doesn't show up in the directories until 1914.

The Brooks family never owned a home, always renting, and at the time of her marriage, they were living in same 28 South Main Street boarding house where Leonard had lived for a couple of years.
