Charles Wesley Fuller, 84, of 83 Eaton Street, a life insurance underwriter for 48 years, who was active in Masonic affairs, died yesterday at about 4 pm in his home. He was stricken ill on Thanksgiving Day.
Services will take place Thursday at 2 pm in the Albert W. Spear funeral home, 1222 Fairfield Avenue, with the Rev. Delmar S. Markle, rector of St. George’s Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in Lawncroft cemetery.
Despite his age, Mr Fuller was active in his field at the time of his death. He was associated with the Howard V. Krick agency, 951 Park Avenue, and the Penn Mutual Life Insurance company. Mr Fuller entered the insurance business in April, 1906, when he became a representative of the Mutual Life Insurance company of New York. Twenty years later, he went to Philadelphia for seven years as a broker for both the Mutual Life and Penn Mutual Life Insurance companies.
Won Gold Medals 5 Times
In 1933, he returned to Bridgeport to join the Krick agency. On his 82nd birthday, he announced that he had sold a total of more than $8,000,000 of insurance. The winner of five gold medals for success in his field, he was five times a member of his firm’s quarter-million club. The award is based on the amount of annual business done.
Born in Standish, ME, Mr Fuller’s first job came during the blizzard of 1888--shoveling snow for the Maine Central railroad. This was the start of a 19-year career in railroading, the latter part of which he served as foreman of construction for the Maine Central and New York, New Haven and Hartford railroads.
It was while he was with the New Haven railroad that he moved to Shelton. There, he became assistant superintendent of the Whitlock Printing Press company before entering the insurance field.
Active in Masonic Order
Mr Fuller was active in Masonic affairs. He was a member of the King Hiram lodge, No 12 AF and AM of Derby; Jerusalem chapter 13 PAM; Jerusalem council, R and SM; Hamilton commandery, No 5, KT; the Lafayette consistory, SPRSAASR and the Pyramid Temple AAONMS.
He came to Bridgeport in 1919 and maintained residence here during the period he worked in Philadelphia.
Mr Fuller is survived by his wife, Jane Oxley Fuller; three sons, Edwin O Fuller of Bridgeport, Alvin M Fuller of Huntington, and Wesley G. Fuller of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs Clarence Dame of Orlando, Fla, and four grandchildren.
