  • Notes
    • JARED'S occupation was pastor from 1819 to 1823 at First IndependentChurch, Baltimore, Md.
JARED'S occupation was professor of history and in 1849 became presidentof the university and resigned in 1853
JARED died March 14, 1866, at CAMBRIDGE, MASS.
After being graduated from Harvard College in 1815, he studied theology at the Harvard Divinity School for a short period (1817-1818) served as editor of the North American Review. In 1818, he entered the Unitarian ministry, and in the following year became pastor of the First Independent Church, Balitmore, Md. He resigned in 1823, he bought the North American Review, which he edited until 1829, when he sold the periodical to devote all his time to historical research.
He traveled extensively in the United States and Europe in an endeavor to consult all available source material. Appointed professor of history at Harvard in 1839, he organized the department there. In 1849 he became president of the university, but resigned four years later. He passed the rest of his life at Cambridge, collecting material for a proposed history of the American Revolution.
He is best known for the writings for "THE WRITINGS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON" (12 Vols.,1834-1837), which, though marred by exagerations and omissions, paved the way for future Washington scholars. "THE WORKS OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN" (10 vols.,1836-1840), though it contains many omissions, was more carefully prepared.
