  • Notes
    • He grew up on a farm and had the usual common school education. He learned the carpenter's trade and was employed for a time in Boston, then returned to New H ampshire and went into the employ of the Randlett Manufacturing Company, now th e Laconia Car Company, where he worked at carpentry. Here he kept pace with th e business, was overseer of one shop and later of two. The amount of labor nece ssary to the discharge of his duties overtaxed his strength and he resigned, an d the work was afterwards performed by two overseers. He was first a Whig in p olitics, then during the continuance of the Know Nothing party he was a member of that organization, and on the rise of the Republican party he became a membe r of that. He was a early member of Winnipiseogee Lodge, No. 7, of which he wa s later noble grand. He was an upright citizen and a useful member of the commu nity.
