  • Notes
    • Johannes Weygel emigrated on 30 November 1750 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; The following memo is from p 449 of "Pennsylvania German Pioneers," by Strassberger.
Johannes and Adam Weygel are listed on the manifest of the Ship Sandwich that sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. They arrived 30 Nov 1750 and took their oath of allegiance at the Philadelphia Court House.
According to tradition they came from South Rhineland and were German speaking Swiss called German Swissers by their neighbors. Johannes Weygel was also known as John Wygal.
      ——
John Wygal came to Back Creek about 1772 and appears on the tithable list for that year. He took up 91 acres on the headwaters by survey in 1774 under the spelling Waghill. Nothing else is known of his activities. By 1800 he was already deceased, without a will, and his widow Barbara who was then living in Jefferson County, Kentucky, sold her interest in her husband's estate to John Crow (Kegley, Tithables, p. 16; Montgomery County Survey Book A, p. 110; Montgomery County Deed Book C, p. 507).
In 1806 the heirs of John Wygal, Adam and Sebastian Wygal, James Miller and his wife Peggy (Wygal), Meredith Raines and his wife Mary (Wygal) and Thompson Farmer whose wife had been Catherine Wygal then deceased, sold their interests in the same 91 acres to John Crow. In 1807 John Wygal sold his interest in the same land, and in 1810 Anna Christina Wiley of Garrett County, Kentucky, sold her share of her father's estate to John Crow (Montgomery County Deed Books D, pp. 370,415; E, p. 67).
