  Portsmouth Herald, Portsmouth, NH; Thursday, Jan 22, 1931 Engagement Announced Mr and Mrs Clarence E Dame of Malden, Mass, formerly of Atlantic Heights, announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Ella, to Albert L. Conary of Everett, Mass. —— There is a gap of more than 10 years between child 2 and child 3. The story is that Mary Ella had the first 2 children with no problems, but after Albert Jr was born, she slipped on the ice and was severly injured. I don’t know the exact nature of her injuries, but the doctors told her that having more children would be fatal. This was before the days of birth control, and the only way to prevent children was abstinence. Husband Albert was not happy about that, and actively met his needs outside the marriage, sometimes flaunting his infidelity to Mary Ella. Eventually, a surgical cure for Mary Ella’s injuries was developed, but it was only legal in Connecticut. So, the family moved to Connecticut and Mary Ella had the surgery. After which she was able to have two more children. Ticked off by her husband’s indiscretions, however, she also had extra-marital affairs during this time, often bringing her paramours into the family home. As far as we know, she didn’t conceive children from these outside partners. We can’t be sure about the results of Albert’s ventures.
