• Notes

  Made his fortune as a manufacturer of lamps, lanterns, gas fixtures and chandeliers. Was a solid Congregationalist in Charlestown, Massachusetts. In 1871 he gave an endowment of $50,000 to a fledgling Congregationalist college in Northfield, Minnesota. At the time, it was the largest contribution to a college that far west. In gratitude, the college was re-named Carleton College in his honor. He was also a member of the Bunker Hill Monument Association. He is buried in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, on Spruce Ave. near Jonquil path, in a family plot next to his first wife who preceeded him in death and was the mother of his 5 children. His seocond wife, Susan Willis, is also buried in this plot. She preceded him in death by only a few months in the same year, 1876. [1]
