Historical Notes It is generally believed that he came to Ipswich, Massachusetts about 1654
as an indentured servant. The following information is extracted from
"Genealogical History of the Duncan Stuart Family in America" by Joseph A.
Stuart 1894 (available in Sutro Library) From Savage's "Genealogical
Dictionary of First Settlers of New England" under "Stewart or Stuart,
sometimes Steward; Duncan, Newbury, shipwright, had at Newbury, Martha,
    April 4, 1659; Charles, June 5, 1661; James, Oct. 8, 1664; Henry, May 1,
1669; then removed to Rowley and had three more, and died there at the age
of 100 years." In the first Rowley tax list extant, 1691, Duncan is taxed.
He was an owner of land at Ipswich, Mass., in 1658, and with his wife Ann
had Katherine, June 8, 1658, one year earlier than Savage had any account of
him; also that at Newbury he had Elizabeth, on Nov. 2, 1662. In Salem,
Massachusetts a deed dated April 16, 1718, recorded Vol. 37, fol. 230 in
which James Stuart, of Boxford; John Stuart, of Rowley; Samuel Stewart, of
Wells, Ebenezer Stuart, of Newbury, deceased, convey to Stephen Greenleaft
certain land; which had been conveyed by our honored father, "Dunkin
    Stewart."

Extracts from "Essex Institute Historical Collections" that in Vol. XIV, the
records of deaths of First Church, Rowley had John Stewart, aged 90 years
and 8 or 9 months, which would give him a birth date of February or March
1666, and make his birth in Newbury, three years earlier than Henry's. This
verbatim record is also from the same source: "1717. Dunkin Stewart, about
(it's thot) an 100 years old, Aug 30"; and "1729. Old Widow Stewart, relict
    of Duncan, July 9."

Gage's "History of Rowley" "Shipbuilding was first carried on in Rowley at
Rowley landing by Duncan Stewart and sons, who came from Newbury as early as
1680, and perhaps earlier. Previous to his death he sold his shipyard to
    Edward Saunders."

"Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine" "...this branch of
the Stewards, or Stewarts, trace to Duncan Steward, of Ipswich,
Massachusetts, who settled there in 1658. He joined the church in Rowley,
September 26, 1723; his wife Anne joined September 17, 1721. Both Duncan
and Anne Steward lived to be nearly one hundred years old; they made their
home in Newbury, Massachusetts, where Duncan was a shipbuilder; in 1680 they
were living in Rowley. ... Some of the branches of the family spell their
name Stewart, others Stuart, but it is positively known that Duncan spelled
    his Steward."

Salem Registry of Deeds lists six deeds for Duncan Steward, one deed Dunckin
Steward and one deed Duncan Stewart.

"Founders of Early American Families" published by The General Court of the
Order of Founders and Patriots of America, Cleveland, Ohio 1985 lists Duncan
Stewart as a Scotch prisoner. "The non-English colonists from the British
Isles were almost entirely Scots. ... Yet the great majority were prisoners
who were taken captive by the armies of Oliver Cromwell and brought to
America in 1651 or 1652. Here they were sold as indentured servants for a
period of severan years or less. Many of the "Scotch prisoners" were
deported to Boston where they were acquired by planters from Maine to the
    Plymouth colony."

  • Notes
    • Alexander and his older brother Duncan were shipped to the USA as prisoners in 1650 and arrived in Maine.
According to family tradition, Duncan was born about 1623 in the parish of Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. He was a soldier who was captured in the Cromwellian War and was shipped to Massachusetts, USA, as an indentured servant. Duncan Stewart was transported to Ipswich, Massachusetts sometime before 1649. He was enslaved as an indentured servant to George Hadley in whose service he worked as a shipwright. Duncan married about APR 1654 to Ann Winchurst who was an indentured servant of John Cogswell. Duncan and Ann were whipped for fornication by order of the church sometime prior to their marriage.
      ——
Duncan Stewart was born in the Highlands of Scotland about 1623. He espoused the cause of his kinsman King Charles II, and in supporting him, either at the battle of Dunbar in 1650, or Worcester in 1651, was captured by the army of Cromwell, and with the other prisoners taken in those battles sent to the American Colonies, and indentured as servants to the Colonists. Duncan was landed at Ipswich, Mass., in 1654 and married Anna Winchurst of that town. They removed to Newbury in 1659 and for thirty years occupied a farm in Byfield Parish near the Rowley town line. They later removed to Rowley. In early Suffolk Court Records, Vol. 42, p. 75, dated 1698, on file at the courthouse in Boston, Mass., can be found the deposition of Duncan Stewart "About seventy-five years old" and witnessed by the court officer. The name of Duncan Stewart, and later a reference to his widow as "Old Widow Stewart" appears in Rowley town records. Duncan died in 1717, and his wife in 1729, probably over a hundred years old."
      - From "Sprague Journal of Maine History, Vol. VIII"

"DUNCAN, Newbury, shipwright, perhaps br. of Alexander, had Martha, b. 4 Apr. 1659; Charles, 5 June 1661; James, 8 Oct. 1664; Henry, 1 May 1669; rem. to Rowley, had three more, [[vol. 4, p. 191]] and d. 1717, aged, as Coffin says, prob. from exagger. tradit. 100."
      - From Savage

      Their first child was Catherine.
