  • Notes
    • s/o Robert PEASLEY & Jane
      m1 abt 1625 Jane SEVERANCE
      ——
He was "living in Haverhill before 1646", where he received four acres of land in the division of lands in 1645. He was a successful farmer and acquired a good property. He occasionally practiced medicine, was one of the commissioners for the settlement of claims, and was selectman of Haverhill in the years 1649, 1650, and 1653. He belonged to the Society of Friends or Quakers, and sometimes supplied as a lay preacher. He "removed from Haverhill to Salisbury, the part of the town in which he lived later being given the name Amesbury", and later still, named Newton, becoming a part of New Hampshire.
      ——
Joseph caused himself some problems in the early settlement, by preaching without permission and even going against court orders. Thomas Macy was his "partner in crime", also leading services. While living in New Town he and his supporters failed to attend services in Old Town and neglected to give financial support. The Norfolk General Court fined every absent member 5 shillings per occurrence and an additional 5 shillings owed by Joseph and Thomas per week as punishment for their preaching. in 1659 the court stated Joseph's preaching “was very weak and unfiit” when again barring him from preaching. He preached the doctrine proclaimed by George Fox and John Ap John back in England and Wales, the doctrines that resulted in the formation of the society of Friends in 1653. Macy fled the persecution that year or early the next and settled in Nantucket. Joseph died that next year.
