  • Notes
    • Lt John Shapleigh was the s/o Alexander Shapleigh Jr. John was born several months after the death of his father. John's uncle, a s/o the senior Alexander Shapleigh, had no children, but brought from England, and raised in America, his nephew John Shapleigh.

John came to Kittery in New England with his mother and grandfather Alexander, and some aunts and uncles.

In John's deposition of June 1678, he states his age as about 36 years, intestate.

Lieutenant John Shapleigh (1642-1706) received a grant of land consisting of 110 acres at Spruce Creek in Kittery which was in the area where the present Kittery Trading Post is located. He also inherited large properties and businesses from his uncle, Major Nicholas Shapleigh.

John Shapleigh was listed as a commissioned sargent for Kittery 4 July 1659, and made an ensign on 18 July 1665, and was referred to as a lieutenant in 1695. He played an important part in the civic and political life of Kittery, serving on various juries, and was a selectman, highway surveyor, town treasurer, and deputy.

The second Shapleigh house built on the site of Kittery House (next door to Sandy Hill) was a garrison for protection from the Indians, which the town ordered Lt John Shapleigh to build and fortify.

In 1706 John was returning from the site of his sawmill on Sturgeon Creek, with his son Nicholas (named after the uncle who adopted John Sr). They were attacked by Indians, John was "cruelly killed" and Nicholas taken captive "and carried to Canada."

Piscataqua, June 7th. On Wednesday last was launched here the Lusitania Galley, burthen about 500 tuns, whereof Capt. John WENTWORTH is Commander. And yesterday Mr. John SHAPLIE and his son being riding on the road near Kittery, their horses were found all bloody without their riders; a party of the garison that went out in quest of the sculking enemy, found Mr. SHAPLIES body, and his head cut off, but cannot tell what is become of the son.
