  • Notes
    • John Sinclair is reputed to have been captured by the forces of Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester in September of 1651 or at the Dunbar "Drove" in September of 1650. He was one of 150 prisoners of war exiled under indenture to the saw mills of New Hampshire owned by Nicholas Lissen, a Scotsman who emigrated in 1637. Among his co-workers at the mill was John Bean, another indentured prisoner of war, and Christian Dolloff, whose origins are not known. John Bean and John Sinclair, and all these indentured and transported prisoners of war, endured hellish circumstances from the time of their capture in Scotland until they arrived in America, and those circumstances are documented in the Sinclair chapter.

In January of 1659 he was a free man, and purchased ten acres in Exeter.

Their children and grandchildren married each other: Dolloff, Bean, Sinclair, and Lissen.

Most of the families of descent from John Sinclair hold the oral tradition that John Sinclair was the great-grands/o George Sinclair, the Fourth Earl of Caithness. While unproven, this remains a strong possibility.
