  Husband Thomas Adams died leaving her pregnant and with 4 other children under the ages of 13, plus the children of Mary Perry, his first wife. Elizabeth, known as Betsey, was the niece of General Henry Knox who was an historic figure in the Revolutionary War. She was also related to a General Dolloff (other information not known) who served "with distinction" in the Revolutionary War as well. At the time that Elizabeth married Thomas, in 1809, he was a widower with 7 children, all of whom had been born between 1793 and 1807, and which children ranged in ages at the time of Betsey's marriage to Thomas, from 2 years of age (Benjamin) to 16 years of age (Polly.) It is presumed that Elizabeth possibly assumed the care of these children as well as those she bore Thomas herself. In Albert C Adams' history (see his Notes section), in 1838 he spent a year between voyages visiting with his mother. It is assumed, that since he was sailing out of Norfolk, that at that time Betsey was still living in Maine or New Hampshire.
