    • John S. McGavren was a graduate of Iowa State University and trained as a lawyer. He had grown up in Missouri Valley, Iowa, and returned there to enter law practice, but in 1890 took a position with the First National Bank of Missouri Valley, of which he became president in 1918. For 28 years he was on the School Board and was the man most responsible for the building of a new high school for the town, as well as a public library. Shortly before he died he had gone into a partnership to establish a canning factory. He was killed in an automobile accident, which was a great shock to the town as well as to his family. A local newspaper described his funeral as "the largest ever held in this city," and as his body was taken to the cemetery, the route was lined by school children. One news article had this to say about him: "In after years, should someone appear in our midst who combines of rare good sense, industry, integrity, energy, and who can gain and hold practically the confidence of all our people in whatever undertaking he endorses, the highest compliment the community can bestow will be 'He is a man somewhat like John McGavren.’”
