    • m2 Sarah ALEXANDER (1750—1831)

      Raised in the section of Rutland that became Barre, Jonas, at age twenty, bought in 1765 "fifty acres of land, more or less - lot #10 in the first division of land in said Warwick" (Hampshire County deed #9-165). Several of his siblings had already moved to Warwick and the others, as well as their parents, followed. He undoubtedly built a house before going back to Barre to claim his bride. His homestead, which remained in the family for three generations, was on Chestnut Hill Road.

      Jonas served in the Revolutionary War as a member of Captain Peter Proctor's company of militia who marched, on July 10, 1777, to "reinforce the Northern Army" after Burgoyne's seige of Fort Ticonderoga. One can only wonder if they went as far as Bennington, VT and if he met his Robinson cousins, sons of his father's sister Mercy, who were actively involved in the defense of that town. They were home a month later, thus missing the Battle of Bennington, and still later, in October, Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, but the role of local militias in the light of the small standing army was invaluable.

      Jonas wrote his will in 1818, naming all his living children as well as his second wife Sarah (Alexander) Holton and her daughter Freedom Holton. He was to live many more years however, dying at nearly 92 years of age.
