  • Notes
    • Jonas Leonard Sargent was born December 12, 1885, the third child and first s/o Herbert and Addie Sargent.

The family was probably living in the house that Addie and her sister Cora had inherited from her stepfather Warren Stratton. At least they were there the following summer when Leonard's sister Ava later recalled that Lenny's baby carriage rolled off the stone wall that raises the lawn above the road, scaring everyone, but little harm done to baby. Ava also remembered that they lived on Northfield Mountain during the blizzard of 1888. The house has for many years now been owned by the McCassie family.

Leonard grew up in a very small town setting, with a garden and afew farm animals and plenty of chores. Even with that and school, hefound time for fun including the fairly new sport of baseball, and playedon town teams. He joined the volunteer fire department probably as ateenager (still considered a rite of passage by teenage Erving boys).Clyde remembers hearing about the old hand-pump fire "truck" which alsohad to be pulled by hand by several men. Quite a feat if the fire werein Farley, for instance.

Of course, he had to try other places, and at least by 1907 he was in Bartow, FL as were his sister, Gertie and her husband. Leonard worked in Florida cutting pitch pine trees for the manufacture of turpentine. Somewhere along the way he also acquired some photography equipment and dabbled in that craft, although sadly, no one knows of any existing examples of his work.

He must have missed New England for by 1909 he is listed in the Brattleboro city directory as working at the White River Chair Company and boarding at Stewart Place. His brother Wayne also worked in Brattleboro off and on, and in the 1910 census they were both working at the Estey Organ Factory. Leonard was twenty five and the stage was set for the next chapter in his life.

Named for his long since deceased maternal grandfather, he was known from the beginning as Leonard. Perhaps because he was born in the middle ofthe winter on Northfield Mountain, his birth was never recorded in the records of either Northfield or Erving. If nobody told the town, however, somebody told the newspaper and his birth notice was published on December 21, 1885 in the Greenfield Gazetter and Courier --" In Erving,December 12, a son to Herbert J. and Addie Sargent".
