  • Notes
    • Crossed the Overland Trail in 1849 with the Boston-Newton Company in search of a fortune during the Gold Rush to California. He didn’t find gold but tried hauling goods from Stockton to the mines in the Mokelumne Hill area. In 1850 he bought a tract of rich farming land southwest of the Mokelumne River, which he ran until 1862, when he was appointed port warden of San Francisco.
      ——
Descended from John Staples of Weymouth, MA
