  • Notes
    • From the History of Morton County, North Dakota:
      James Martin Hanley
Throughout his life he was known as Judge Hanley, Jim, or "The Major" Jim born in Minn. in 1877, His father Michael, was born in Ireland, and his Mother, Eliza Cater, in Minn. The family (4 children) was poor, but Jim'smother took in boarders to enable to enter Carleton College, after hegraduated from high school ay age 16. He left college at 18 to study law with an attorney and then enlisted at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898.
He was admitted to the bar in 1899. In 1902, while employed as a oil investigator, Jim went to North Dakota on a business trip. lt changed his life. He met Mr. Voss, a lawer practicing in Mandan, ND, who persuaded him to form a law partnership. After making arrangments, Jim left for Minn. to elope with his best girl, Irma Lewis. They were married in March 1903, and came to Mandan where they spent the rest of their lives, Irma untill 1928 and Jim untill 1947. Many old timers have said Irma Hanley was one of the most beautiful brides to ever come to Mandan. Jim involved himself in community affairs. He helped organize the Mandan Rotary Club and was its first president. On arriving in Mandan he became immersed in politics. He was State's Att. of Morton, speaker of the house, State Senator, Judge of the 6th Judical Dist., ran for Governor in 1926. After Mr. Voss died Jim praciced alone until 1909, when he and John Sullivan formed a lifelong firm known as Hanley & Sullivan. Jim was an excellent public speaker much in demand, and an effective trial lawyer especially noted for his cross-examinations. The military field was abiding interest of Jim. ln 1906 he was instrumental in organizing the ND Nat. Gard. He was comm. and served as Capt. until 1915, when he was promoted to Major. He took the 3rd Battalion, lst ND to the Mexican Boarder incident. ln 1917 was instrumental in forming the 2nd ND Reg., which later became the 148th Machine Gun Battalion serving on the front lines in France in 1917-19. Before Major Hanley went overseas, Mandan citizens, through subscriptions and recognition of his position and previous record, presented him with a splendid riding horse which he christened "Mandan". The horse went with him to Charlotte, NC and then France (Note: the horse was on a separate ship that was sunk by the Germans). Jim was a delegate to orginal caucus in Paris where ground work for the American Legion was laid. He went to St. Louis as a legion delegate and was made a member of the comm. which worked on the final Org. He was a factor in forming the Mandan Gilbert C. Furness Post No. 40 and served as temporary chairperson.
