  • Notes
    • On his father's death, Thomas inherited the Umfreville barony, but he appears not to have been summoned to Parliament as a peer, instead sitting in the House of Commons.
Thomas was knighted by 1387. He was a Commissioner of Array in 1388, and was described as a knight.
He was a knight of the shire for Northumberland, representing the county in Parliament in 1388 and 1390. He was sheriff of Northumberland in 1388-9, a position that included being keeper of the castle of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Thomas fought in Scotland. He took part in the Battle of Otterburn in which the Scots defeated the English. Soon after this, he was made keeper of Roxburgh Castle on the Scottish borders. In 1389 and 1390 he was one of the envoys sent to negotiate with the Scots over violations of a truce and over peace terms.
He also had more local responsibilities. For instance, in 1389 he and others were ordered to punish, and destroy the boats of, people who were contravening regulations about the sale of coal in the Newcastle-upon-Tyne area. The same year he was one of those ordered to survey Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland.
