  • Notes
    • In 1693, when he was nineteen, Richard Waterhouse was fined for not attending musters. He became a master mariner and in 1704 was in command of a ship which was captured by a Spanish privateer while on a voyage to England. Poor James Bryant, a member of the crew, was left in Balboa as a pledge for the ship’s ransom and languished in a Spanish jail for two years.
Capt Waterhouse registered his brigantine Dove, 60 tons, built a Kittery probably in the yard of the Fernald uncles, on January 9, 1707. Her served at Fort William and Mary at New Castle form June 28 to July 8, 1708. His business appears to have been successful, and he held two slaves when 1727 tas list was made out. He lived on Doctor’s Island in 1703, but in 1709 he bought a house and land on Pickering’s Neck, in Portsmouth. He also bought land from Richard Mills in 1713 and 1714, and was a proprietor of Barrington in 1725. He had subscribed to Rev John Emerson’s salary in 1713. [2]
