Mr. Carter was born in Blue hill, the son of Vespasian Carter and wife. In his younger days he followed the sea in coasting vessels, and also made many voyages to the West Indies. Later he adopted the business of carpenter. Twelve years ago, while working on a barn in Ashburnham, Mass, we was struck by lightning and never fully recovered from the effects the the stroke. He moved to Worcester, Mass. nine years ago.
Mr Carter was twice married, and is survived by eight children by his first wife—Mrs. Hattie Davis, Mrs. Jane Conary, Joseph Carter, of Surry; Mrs. Anna Rock, of Barre, Vt, Mrs. O. O. Carter and Mrs. G. A. Pierce, of Sedgwick, Fred F. Carter, of Belfast, and Mrs. Flora Herrick, of Bangor. His second wife survives him, and one daughter by this marriage— Mrs. Fairbanks, with whom he lived. He leaves also three brothers and three sisters.
Services were held at Worcester, and his body was brought to Surry to be laid beside his first wife. Services were held at the church, Rev. J. D. McGraw officiating. A goodly number of relatives and friends paid their respects by attending the services. It was his last request that he be brought to his old home for interment.
Mr. Carter was a member of the baptist church in Surry for fifty-one years.
