Killed while trying to free prisoners taken by Indians after the attack on Haverhill.
    -----
On 27 Aug 1708, Haverhill, then a compact village of about thirty houses, was attacked and almost entirely destroyed by Algonquin, St. Francois and Penobscot Indians under the direction of the French forces from Canada. Sixteen of the inhabitants were massacred, including Rev. Benjamin Rolfe and family, many made captives, and when the enemy retreated they were followed by Captain Samuel Ayer with a company of twenty men who, though out-numbered thirteen to one, attacked them fearlessly, killing nine of their number and retaking several prisoners. The Captain was shot in the groin and died just as his son reached the scene with reinforcements. [The date of the attack conflicts with the much later date given for Captain Ayer's death.]

    ——
The immigrant John Ayer was said to have come from England, arriving on The James in 1635 with his wife Hannah and their first 4 children - Thomas, Rebecca, Robert, and Peter.

    On June 3, 1635, John Ayer set sail for the New World with his family, including his two brothers-in-law, John and Stephen, aboard the ship James. As they approached New England, a hurricane struck, and they were forced to ride it out just off the coast of modern-day Hampton, New Hampshire. According to the ship's log and the journal of Increase Mather, whose father Richard Mather and family were passengers, the following was recorded;

"At this moment,... their lives were given up for lost; but then, in an instant of time, God turned the wind about, which carried them from the rocks of death before their eyes. ...her sails rent in sunder, and split in pieces, as if they had been rotten ragges..."

They tried to stand down during the storm just outside the Isles of Shoals, but lost all three anchors, as no canvas or rope would hold, but on Aug 13, 1635, torn to pieces, and not one death, all one hundred plus passengers of the James managed to make it to Boston Harbor.

John married Hannah MNU about 1620 in Cockfield, Durham, England. Hannah was born in 1598 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England; died on 8 Oct 1688 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts; was buried in Pentucket Cemetery, Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Ancestor to President James Abram GARFIELD
    ——
William Allen appears in Salisbury, MA in 1639. He participated in the first division of Salisbury land in 1639 when the town was called Colchester, and in that of 1640 when it became Salisbury. He was a house carpenter by trade and because he consistently signed documents with his mark, it would seem that he could not write. He participated when the town divided the mowing of beach lots in 1654 and in 1657 he bought lot No. 35 of Mr. Hall's farm, which Hall had sold to the town, for £1: 18: 2. His name appears on several church lists and petitions. He also bought and sold several small planting lots, ox commons, etc., between 1650 and 1667. He was sworn constable of Salisbury on 9 April 1650 and was on the Grand Jury in the Salisbury Court of 2 December 1666.

In 1677 he was in court twice: one on July 5 he complained that Sarah Taylor, his servant, had departed in a disorderly way, accusing his wife of beating her cruelly. The court ordered Sarah's mother to place her in some godly family and in the meantime Sarah was "to refrain from the company of Goodwife Houldredge and Sarah Buswell." In October Allen and his son, Jeremy, then aged 19, were sued by Joseph Greely to recover a horse which Jeremy had taken without Greeley's knowledge. Greeley won the case and Allen was ordered to return the horse within one month, if it was sound and well. If it was not, Greeley was to recover £5 in corn or neat cattle.

s/o Simon TUTTLE & Isabel WELLS of Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England.
    ——
John Tuttle was born about 1596 (aged 39 on 2 April 1635), son of Simon Tuttle of Ringstead, Northamptonshire. He married by 1628 Joan (Antrobus) Lawrence, daughter of Walter and Joan (Arnold) Antrobus and widow of Thomas Lawrence.
He was a mercer, yeoman & merchant, with business in Barbados, who brought his family from St. Albans, Hertfordshire to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the Planter (on 2 April 1635, "a mercer, Jo[hn] Tuttell," aged 39, "Joan Tuttell," aged 42, "W[illia]m Lawrence," aged 12, "Marie Lawrence," aged 9, "Abigall Tuttell," aged 6, "Symon Tuttell," aged 4, "Sara Tuttell," aged 2, "Jo[hn] Tuttell," aged 1, and "Joan Antrobuss," aged 65, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Planter).
They first settled at Ipswich MA but moved to Boston between 1649 & 15 November 1650.
John Tuttle left New England permanently in late 1650, sailing to Southampton and then settling at Carrickfergus, Ireland. His wife followed him to Carrickfergus in 1654.
COMMENTS: On 16 February 1649[/50?], John Tuttle entered into a major business deal, apparently ill-advisedly, which within a few months led to a series of legal entanglements and his permanent departure from New England. The last record found for Tuttle in New England was on 28 December 1650, when William Aspinwall took notice of goods which Tuttle had placed on two ships at Boston. He must have sailed for England very soon after, for on 1 March 1650/1 we find him at Southampton in England, signing a lengthy document designed to get him out of his financial predicament. On 6 March 1650/1, while still at Southampton, John Tuttle wrote a letter to John Gore at Roxbury, presumably as a cover letter for the agreement which had recently been completed. By 22 May 1651, these documents had made their way back to Boston, and, a week later, on 29 May 1651, John Tuttle's wife is seen acting on his behalf at Boston. John Tuttle never returned to New England, and is found by 1656 at Carrickfergus, Ireland.
He died in Carrickfergus, Ireland, 30 December 1656. John Tuttle was brother of RICHARD TUTTLE and of WILLIAM TUTTLE .

    • Historical Notes: letters written by Joan Tuttle from Ireland: On 3 October 1656, writing from Carrickfergus to "my dear & loving daughter Jane Gidding at Ipswich," "Joanna Tuttell" referred to "my last dated in February" and then asked to "hear how your breach is made up in respect of the ministry which I long to hear, if you have Mr. Cobete I pray present my love to him and tell him I live under a very honest man, where I enjoy the ordinance of God in New England way"; "I hear Richard S[a]chwell hath paid no rent, I pray speak to him and get it £48, send me word what increase there is of our mare and whether Thomas Bornum have groundsilled the house or not"; "Simon deals very bad with his father, he lies at Barbados and sends no returns but spends all, his father will have no more goods sent to him, I could wish I had no such cause to write, I think he & John intends to undo their father" [EQC 2:174; EQCF 5-31-1]. On 6 April 1657, writing from Carrickfergus to "her loving son Gorg Giding dwelling in Ips[wich]," "Joanna Tuttell" stated that "these are to let you understand that the Lord hath taken to himself my dear husband & left me desolate in a strange land and in debt by reason of Siman's keeping the returns from Barbadous, grief that he hath taken for his two sons hath brought upon him a lingering disease, lost his stomach and pined away never sick till the day before he died which was the 30th of December. I pray talk with Mr. Jeuett about that which I left with you & him this 3 years. I have not heard of anything that he hath done I cannot hear of the cattle nor what increase the mare hath nor the rent. I pray let things be ready for I have writ to John Lawrence to take them into his hands. If Simon or John should come let not them meddle with anything there, my husband hath given them something in his will which I shall pay them, now I will keep the estate in my own hand as long as I live. It may be I may see New England again. I pray look to my house that it be not ruined. Hanna is to be married shortly to a good husband, one that loves her well and a handsome man" [EQC 2:173; EQCF 5-30-1]. On 20 March 1657[/8], writing from Carrickfergus to "her beloved son Mr. George Gidding at Ipswich," "Joanna Tuttell" stated that "I wonder I hear nothing from Mr. Juete. I hear he improves my estate to his own advantage. I prayed him to pay my son Martain £12 in good goods and he let him have nothing but beef that none else would take. I pray you to take care of my estate at Ips[wich] and let not him do what he list but take account of what he doth. There is 4 years rent this March which comes to above a hundred pound"; "I am to remove again 16 miles nearer my son that married my daughter Hannah, [he] hath the employment that my husband was in the treasury, is removed to another town"; "If I should come to New England I fear I should go abegging if reports be true my estate decays apace for want of looking to"; "I pray send no goods to Simon. I hear that of him which will bring my gray head with sorrow to the grave" [EQC 2:142-43; EQCF 4-139-1]. Joan (Antrobus) (Lawrence) Tuttle was still in New England on 18 March 1653/4, when she mortgaged land at Ipswich [EQC 2:365]. She must have left to join her husband in Ireland soon after that date, for, on 6 April 1657, she asked her son-in-law George Gidding to "talk with Mr. Jeuett about that which I left with you & him this 3 year" [EQC 2:173]. Her sons Simon Tuttle and John Tuttle were at Barbados in 1656, 1657 and 1658, at the times of her three letters from Ireland. Simon returned to New England in 1659 [EQC 2:141-43, 171-74] and, despite his mother's dislike of his handling of the family's affairs in Barbados, he was given control of his father's estate that same year, while his mother was still alive [EQC 2:178, 335; EPR 1:277-78]. Son John was last heard of on 6 April 1657, when he was still in Barbados, and was dead by 4 April 1674 [EQC 2:173, 5:292]; further records for him might be found in Barbados.

Ancestor to President John ADAMS & President John Quincy ADAMS

John married Elizabeth Thompson (1594-1676) daughter of Rev. William Thompson, the Vicar of Westbury Parish, Wiltshire for 20 years (1603-1623) and Phyllis maiden name unknown on 10 September 1615, according to the parish records. His parents died soon after John married Elizabeth and he inherited: "The Mylls called Ripond, situate within the Parish of Frome Selwood". His occupation was manufacturing woolen fabric, broadcloths and kerseymeres. He had a very good reputation for a fine product. He is sometimes called a London merchant but that is because he probably had a commission house there, as it would have been the largest market for his product.
    ——
He died on 29 November 1669 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony at the age of 77. He died intestate and the administration of his estate was granted to his wife Elizabeth on 29 March 1670. He was honored with a five mile long funeral procession and buried in the Old North Graveyard, also known as Highland, Cowles-Highland, Cowles Memorial, Highland-Cowles, Old Burying Hill, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. His wife is there beside him, but the graves are now unmarked.
