The British Army Lists from 1770 through 1774 show a George Dame as Lieutenant of the 8th Foot, and mentions in the correspondence of the comandants of Fort Niagara in the Haldimand Papers (British Library, Additional Manucripts Collection) suggest that he had gone onto half-pay before the war, then was commissioned with the Royal Highland Emigrants (later the 84th Foot) in 1775, but then is commissioned Captain in Butler's Rangers on 11 November 1779. At wars end, he was granted 3,000 acres in Bertie Township, Niagara District (vicinity of St. Catherines, Ontario). I will need to go into work to check my sources for these things, but I believe the Royal Highland Emigrant connection could be checked via Todd Braisted's Loyalist Institute or Kim Stacey, the current 'guru' of all things 84th Foot. For the best information on loyalist land grants, I could put you in touch with Gavin Watt of the U.E.L. main office in Toronto.

I was further surprised to see the Theophilus Dam entry as likewise, he is listed as an officer of the King's Regiment (or at least "Theophilus Dame" is). From information on both the Army Lists (1757 through 1771) and the 1767 General Inspection Return, he was a Lieutenant in the regiment from 1757 until promoted to Captain on 27 March 1770, but he retires(?) in 1771.

This isn't too surprising however when it is seen that he was probably born in 1724, making him the oldest captain in the regiment at the time, but not the eldest in terms of his commission, making it unlikely that he would have been promoted to Major.

A family record of 1877 states that he was “A Captain in the British Army who retired at half pay to Three Rivers, where he died”. The Grant family record states: “A Captain in the 8th and 84th Foot Soldiers and served with them in India”. The British Army list of 1775 reads: Ensign George Dame was commissioned on 12 Jun 1775 and joined the 84th Foot or Royal Highland Emigrants in August 1775 remaining until the regiment was disbanded in 1783.
