Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Thomas ADAMS was born on 17 Dec 1771 in Limerick, York, Maine (son of John ADAMS and Mary HILL); died on 10 Jul 1827 in Limerick, York, Maine.

    Notes:

From written records we know that Thomas Adams was "a man of some distinction in his immediate vicinity, and in his later years, he purchased a farm in the neighborhood of Limerick, Maine, to which farm, he and his family retired."

Records show that a Thomas Adams of his age was listed in the 1790 York, Maine census as a "tanner and a currier," tanning and dressing leather.

In 1790 he married Mary Perry in Limerick, Maine, and in 1811, at the age of 38, he married Elizabeth "Betsey" Dolloff.

In the 1800 Limerick, Maine census, a Thomas Adams is listed as having ahousehold with 2 females under 10 (which would correspond to Polly andSally), and 2 males under the age of 10 (John and Oliver), and one male between the ages of 26 and 44 (himself, and son, Thomas) and one female between the ages of 26 and 44 (Mary Perry Adams, his wife.) Listed immediately below his name in that census record, is that of John or Joseph of Josia (illegible) Perry, James Perry, Widow Perry, and John Perry, who are very likely the family of his first wife, Mary Perry.

Thomas Adams died young in 1827, at the age of 52, leaving a young, pregnant widow and four children.

His son, Thomas Frederick Adams, was born four months after Thomas Adams' death, Betsey Dolloff and Thomas Adams had been married only 14 years at the time she was widowed. As they reached the appropriate age, at least two of their sons, Thomas Frederick Adams and Albert C. Adams, were apprenticed to trades at the age of 13, and likely their income was much needed by the fatherless family.

Thomas married Elizabeth ”Betsy” DOLLOFF on 27 Mar 1809. Elizabeth (daughter of Josiah DOLLOFF and Jane KNOX) was born on 24 Aug 1785 in Conway, Carroll, New Hampshire; died in 1865 in Switzerland County, Indiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Elizabeth ”Betsy” DOLLOFF was born on 24 Aug 1785 in Conway, Carroll, New Hampshire (daughter of Josiah DOLLOFF and Jane KNOX); died in 1865 in Switzerland County, Indiana.

    Notes:

Husband Thomas Adams died leaving her pregnant and with 4 other children under the ages of 13, plus the children of Mary Perry, his first wife.

Elizabeth, known as Betsey, was the niece of General Henry Knox who was an historic figure in the Revolutionary War.

She was also related to a General Dolloff (other information not known) who served "with distinction" in the Revolutionary War as well.

At the time that Elizabeth married Thomas, in 1809, he was a widower with 7 children, all of whom had been born between 1793 and 1807, and which children ranged in ages at the time of Betsey's marriage to Thomas, from 2 years of age (Benjamin) to 16 years of age (Polly.) It is presumed that Elizabeth possibly assumed the care of these children as well as those she bore Thomas herself.

In Albert C Adams' history (see his Notes section), in 1838 he spent a year between voyages visiting with his mother. It is assumed, that since he was sailing out of Norfolk, that at that time Betsey was still living in Maine or New Hampshire.

    Children:
    1. Thomas Frederick ADAMS was born on 21 Nov 1827 in Limerick, York, Maine; died on 29 Oct 1906 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas.

    3. Charles ADAMS was born about 1810; died in ?.

    5. Harriet E. ADAMS was born about 1818; died on 28 Jul 1843 in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine.

  3. 6.  Nathaniel TIBBETTS was born on 27 Feb 1797 in Boothbay, Lincoln, Maine; died on 8 Feb 1886 in Winthrop, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

Nathaniel married Clarissa SOUTHARD. Clarissa was born on 6 Oct 1801 in Boothbay, Lincoln, Maine; died on 3 Nov 1883 in Richmond, Sagadahoc, Maine. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Clarissa SOUTHARD was born on 6 Oct 1801 in Boothbay, Lincoln, Maine; died on 3 Nov 1883 in Richmond, Sagadahoc, Maine.

    Notes:

Found in the historical records, is that a lateral descendant of herfamily line, a John Samuel Hill, born 21 May 1826, attended BowdoinCollege in 1846.

It would appear that Mary Hill died shortly after the birth of her secondchild, our ancestor, Thomas Adams. His son, Thomas Frederick Adams, laterleft Maine to live in Indiana, and later still, moved to Kansas.

    Children:
    1. Sarah E. ADAMS was born about 1765 in Limerick, York, Maine; died on 13 Nov 1820 in Limerick, York, Maine.

    Other Events:

    • Military Event: American Revolution - NH, Capt David Page's Co: Pvt
    • Served American Revolution?: Y
    • Military Flag: Y

    Notes:

His place of residence during the American Revolution was Conway, NewHampshire, athough both he and his wife, Jane Knox, lived their lastyears in Quebec, Canada, where they died. They were married in Quebec, soit would appear that Jane was living in Quebec, although her family wasfrom Boston, which provides some confusion. They returned to Quebec intheir later years and both died there.

Records at the Conway, New Hampshire Library show that in April of 1794Josiah was named as "Ensign Josiah Dolloff." He served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in Capt. David Page's Company, from Conway, New Hampshire, enlisting on June 10, 1775.

Josiah was a Patriot, a signer of Association Test, June 9, 1776, in Conway, New Hampshire.

Josiah married Jane KNOX in 1780 in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada. Jane (daughter of William KNOX and Mary CAMPBELL) was born on 26 Nov 1758 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts; died on 9 Jun 1817 in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Jane KNOX was born on 26 Nov 1758 in Pembroke, Plymouth, Massachusetts (daughter of William KNOX and Mary CAMPBELL); died on 9 Jun 1817 in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada.

    Notes:

Jane's parents were from Northern Ireland. Her father, William Knox, was a shipmaster, who died at the age of about 50. The family lived in Boston, and was thereafter supported by Jane's older brother, Henry, from the time he was nine years of age. That same brother later became a figure of historical military importance during the Revolutionary War.

Jane was living in Quebec when she married Josiah Dolloff. All their children were born in New Hampshire, but Jane and Josiah apparently returned to Canada, where they both died.
