  1. 2.  Jonas LEONARD was born on 3 Oct 1814 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts (son of Jonas LEONARD and Martha “Patty” DAVIS); died on 7 Mar 1865 in S Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, Massachusetts.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Farmer, lumberman
    • Residence: 1864, S Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts

    Notes:

Jonas was primarily a farmer, but at some point acquired an interest in a lumbermill and a pail shop in Royalston. After his mother's death, he sold the Warwick homestead and moved the family to South Deerfield. The reasons for that move are unclear. He only briefly enjoyed his new home, dying in less than a year. His death certificate calls him "lumberman" and says he died of liver problems. In his will, he names all his living children and gives them small bequests, leaving the bulk of his estate to his wife for her use and the rearing of the children. He expressed the desire that she keep the house, but she sold in a few months and tried to move back to Warwick.

Jonas married Elizabeth CROFT on 1 May 1839 in Ware, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Elizabeth was born on 18 Mar 1818 in Ware, Hampshire, Massachusetts; died on 31 Jul 1883 in Erving, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Elizabeth CROFT was born on 18 Mar 1818 in Ware, Hampshire, Massachusetts; died on 31 Jul 1883 in Erving, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

How did a girl from Ware meet a boy from Warwick? The only clue is that Elizabeth's sister, Sarah had married one Daniel Green who had moved from Warwick to Ware, and it must have been visits between family and friendsthat brought about the introduction. A family of eight children resulted, and her household also contained, for most of her married life, her mother-in-law and her husband's Aunt Rhoda.

After Jonas's death, she arranged to rent a Warwick house, sold the SouthDeerfield property, and was on the way home, when children that had goneahead brought the news that the house in Warwick was not available. Shewas stranded in Erving with wagonload of children and household goodsuntil Ephraim Murdock of Northfield Mountain offered refuge. The familystayed there for about a year until Elizabeth married Warren Stratton. Apremarital agreement protected her childrens' rights and hers to Jonas'sestate.

She had the sorrow of seeing four of her children die young, a daughter as a small child, and three sons as young adults.

  1. 4.  Jonas LEONARD was born on 3 Sep 1784 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts (son of Jonas LEONARD and Sarah MASON); died on 1 Dec 1844 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, Massachusetts.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Farmer
    • Military Event: War of 1812 - Capt. William Burnet’s Co
    • Military Flag: Y

    Notes:

Jonas was on the muster roll of Capt. William Burnet in the War of 1812 and his company was detached to the defense of Boston in Sept. 1814, after the British had attacked Castine, Maine. As a young man, he bought from his father an "undivided half of the family farm (he would sell in like manner to his son Jonas years later). When he died, Patty declined to administer the estate, requesting that son Jonas do so. Interesting items in the inventory include - a pew in the Methodist meeting house in Northfield, a sleigh, wagon and buffalo robe, 25 mill logs (at mill) and nine hundred feet of hemlock boards, 100 sap buckets, and in the house -a paring machine, a bible and a lot of books, a tea set, a looking glass, and among personal effects - two pairs of boots, two pairs of pantaloons, three waistcoats, a pair of spectacles, and a pair of mittens. Many other items are listed and it appears to be a moderately prosperous farmer's household.

Jonas married Martha “Patty” DAVIS on 10 Dec 1807 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts. Martha was born on 9 Jun 1787 in Gilsum, Cheshire, New Hampshire; died on 3 Aug 1863 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Martha “Patty” DAVIS was born on 9 Jun 1787 in Gilsum, Cheshire, New Hampshire; died on 3 Aug 1863 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

Patty was only eight years old when her father died and the family was forced to seek town assistance. At some point, she went to live in Warwick with her uncle Jonathan Davis and his wife Hannah. They were childless and she was probably a joy to them.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Farmer
    • Military Event: American Revolution - MA, Capt Peter Proctor's Co: Pvt
    • Served American Revolution?: Y
    • Military Flag: Y

    Notes:

    m2 Sarah ALEXANDER (1750—1831)

Raised in the section of Rutland that became Barre, Jonas, at age twenty, bought in 1765 "fifty acres of land, more or less - lot #10 in the first division of land in said Warwick" (Hampshire County deed #9-165). Several of his siblings had already moved to Warwick and the others, as well as their parents, followed. He undoubtedly built a house before going back to Barre to claim his bride. His homestead, which remained in the family for three generations, was on Chestnut Hill Road.

Jonas served in the Revolutionary War as a member of Captain Peter Proctor's company of militia who marched, on July 10, 1777, to "reinforce the Northern Army" after Burgoyne's seige of Fort Ticonderoga. One can only wonder if they went as far as Bennington, VT and if he met his Robinson cousins, sons of his father's sister Mercy, who were actively involved in the defense of that town. They were home a month later, thus missing the Battle of Bennington, and still later, in October, Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, but the role of local militias in the light of the small standing army was invaluable.

Jonas wrote his will in 1818, naming all his living children as well as his second wife Sarah (Alexander) Holton and her daughter Freedom Holton. He was to live many more years however, dying at nearly 92 years of age.

Jonas married Sarah MASON on 22 Feb 1770 in Barre, Worcester, Massachusetts. Sarah was born on 30 Sep 1751 in Barre, Worcester, Massachusetts; died on 6 Oct 1802 in Warwick, Franklin, Massachusetts; was buried in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
