  1. 2.  George Newell HOWARD was born on 19 Nov 1852 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York (son of John William HOWARD and Sarah Ann POPPLETON); died on 5 Jun 1947 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California; was buried in Dos Palos Cemetery, Dos Palos, Merced, California.

    Reported to have been born in Verona, Oneida,, NY. George moved toOswego,, NY in 186 5 where he lived five years. In 1870 he moved toMichigan, living there eight years. In 187 8 he moved to Cloud,, KS,and in the fall of that year he filed for a homested in Graham C o. inwestern Kansas. He settled on the homestead the following spring. In 1880he built a ba rn of magnesium stones with the house combined, dug a wellwhich caved in twice, and plante d ten acres of corn. The neighbors allgot together in the fall to husk the corn.

    After marriage and the birth of two sons George moved to Scottsville in1885 where he rente d 160 acres for $50.00 with a credit of $2.00 forbreaking the land. He planted broomcorn wit h a yield of 50 bushels peracre; this he sold for $.45 per bushel. In the fall of that yea r hebroke his left leg.

    In 1886 George moved to Kern's Place, South Concordia, KS where he rented160 acres for $300 . He planted 40 acres of broomcorn for which he got$70.00 per ton.

    In 1887 he moved to Ben Lake's farm about 6 miles from Concordia. Heplanted 80 acres of cor n and about 80 of oats. The corn burned up.

    In 1888 he moved to Parker's place about 6 miles out of Concordia. Ofthe 160 acres, 80 wer e in pasture and 80 in cultivation. He got abouthalf a crop..

    In 1889 he moved to Norton's place with 70 acres in one field, 15 inanother, and the balanc e in timber and pasture. they lived in a loghouse. He hired to hands and son Carl helped t o harrow the awful fieldsof cocleburs. He got 50 bushels to the acres of corn which sold a t $.14per bushel. The oats yielded 50 bushels to the acre and were light at 28pounds to th e bushel.

    In 1890 He rented his brother-in-law Theodore Hass' place. He traded oncorn with Burton has s and helped him haul his to town. The place didn'tgrow anything because of a drought and n o water in the well. He hauledwater 2 mile and had to drive 25 cattle to the water. They w ere nicefat calves at 200-300 pounds and sold for $12.00.

    In 1891 George went to the state of Washington because his brother Jeanhad been there. Jea n had returned to MI. After a month with no workGeorge returned to Concordia and rented 16 0 acres from Old Man Saddy. Hepaid 1/3 of the corn for rent. In the fall he bought 80 acre s for $1,000with $400 down and got a goo crop of corn. Then came hard times with nowork, n o sale of stones from and quarry, and no crops left.

    In 1894 he rented the La Nave place where he farmed over 2 section.Alice had moved acros s the road with the help of the boys.

    In 1900 the La Nave place sold, and he moved near Aurora to the Bledsoeplace. The raised fai r crops. the following year his children Bertha andWalter died of scarlet fever.

    In 1903 George sold out and moved from Kansas to Dos Palos, CA, thefamily coming by train i n a boxcar. In 1912 he moved to Burrell whereClaude built them a new house on 40 acres of "d ry farm" land duringwhich time the crops were poor and work scarce. In 1918 he moved from Burrell to a lot in Lanare, a new townsite. He dry farmed in the MurphySlough area and hired o ut by the day when work was available.

    In 1920 George lived in Fresno,, CA with his wife Alice E. andchildren Roy, Glen L., Rub y F., and Harold W.

    In 1923 he moved to Long Beach, CA and lived with Glen and Harold in thehouse they had rente d. He worked for Stone & Webster on Terminal Islandin the machine shop. In 1926 to Compton t o a house on Roy's lot.

    In 1930 he moved back to Dos Palos and lived in a house built on Newell'sranch by Glen and H arold. He lived there until Alice died in 1935. From1935 to 1944 he lived back an forth betw een Roy's and Glen's homes.

    In 1945 he moved to a rest home in Oakhurst, CA. The following year hemoved to a rest home i n Santa Cruz, CA where he passed away in 1947.

    In 1850 Howard farmed in Verona Township, Oneida,, NY (page 185); thevalue of his propert y was $300. At home were Deborah, Horace, 24,Charles, 23, Harry, 18, Edwin, 16, Selestia, 13, and M. H. age 23 fromNY. Next door was John H. Pease, age 53 from VT, and family.

    In 1860 he farmed in Verona Township, Oneida, (page 790); the value ofhis land was $4,00 0 and personal property of $600. At home were Deborah,Harry S., a farm laborer age 28, Marth a, 16 from NY (daughter or wife ofHarry?), and Edward Wilman, age 15 from Switzerland.

    On 2/12/1862 he wrote about leaving money to Justin V., Desdemona A., andto Harriet, as wel l as to Charles' children and Edwin. Elizabeth C. isto have the furniture. Mentions the de ath of old Mr. Frazee, GeorgeWilliams and John Newcomb (just alive). The letter was writte n fromDurhamville in Verona Township, Oneida, NY. Two more daughters appearin the 1835 c ensus, born between 1819 and 1835. In 1835 he owned 50acres, 12 cattle, 9 sheep, and 6 hogs .

    In 1870 Tisdell Howard lived in Eckford, Calhoun Co, MI (page 560) withhis son-in-low Georg e Low and family; he was listed without occupation,age 81, from Vermont. With the family nex t door lived Abram Howard, afarm laborer, 24 from NY.
