    Notes:

George and his wife migrated to North Carolina in 1729 to avoid the Quaker persecution in MA. initially this land was held by Lords Proprietors and their descendants who were recipients of this land as a gift from the King.

George Sutton died at the age of 56 on his birthday April 12, 1669 in Albemarle County, Perquimans Dist, North Carolina. Note: There are no records showing his middle name as “Ambrose.”
    ——
Sailed from Sandwich, Kent, England in 1634 on the ship Hercules & settled in Scituate, MA. Listed on ship’s manifest as servant of Nathaniel Tilden.

About 1668, after Plymouth Colony enacted penal laws against the Quakers, George Sutton immigrated to North Carolina with most of his family to escape religious persecution. He died in what is now Perquimans Co, NC within a year of leaving Massachusetts.

He was a planter in Scituate from Mar 5, 1638/39 to 1643. He was also a town officer. He had lands laid out on 1st Herring Brook. His house was near John Daman's at the SW end of Greenfield Lane where it unites with the Driftway. He and his family were Church of England until sometime after 1650 when he and his family pursued the Quaker Faith. In 1668 he emigrated to Perquimans, NC because of Quaker persecution in Massachusetts. All of his family went except Daniel who went to Burlington, West Jersey and William, who went to Eastham, MA and then Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ
    ——
On 4 December 1638, “George Sutton” was one of eight Scituate men “presented for receiving strangers & foreigners into their houses & lands, without license of the Governor or Assistant, or acquainting the town of Scittuate therewith” (annotated in the margin “all discharged 5th month, 1638, [1639] by the Court”}[PCR 1:106].
On 18 January 1643/4, “Georg[e] Sutton of the same [Scituate], planter,” was surety for James Till [PCT 2:68].
John Sutton of Scituate was not a son this immigrant, but of JOHN SUTTON [NEHGR 91:61-65].

No records for George Sutton and his family have been found in Plymouth Colony after 1654 [PCR 7:129]. About that time, George Sutton was already showing some knowledge of Virginia. Another passenger on the Hercules, William Hatch, son of William Hatch [1635, Scituate] [GM 2:3:241-44], made his will on 13 September 1653, describing himself as “of Scittuate … being upon a journey to Virginia”; one of the witnesses was George Sutton, who testified that “I received this of William Hatch sign and sealed and he told me it was his own act and deed” [PCPR 2:44; Joseph Neal And 118].
Note: Thomas HATCHE (5077) is his wife’s Grandfather.

ASSOCIATIONS: George Sutton was almost certainly closely related to SIMON SUTTON , also a passenger on the Hercules and also a servant to NATHANIEL TILDEN (1635, Scituate}.

George married Sarah TILDEN on 13 Mar 1637 in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. Sarah (daughter of Nathaniel TILDEN and Lydia Bourne HUCKSTEP) was born on 1 Jan 1613 in Tenterden, Kent, England; died on 20 Mar 1677 in Perquimans County, N Carolina; was buried in unknown. • Historical Notes: The Sutton name is from the Anglo-Saxon words, sudh, meaning "south", and tun, meaning "town". Therefore the name designated "the family of Southtown." In 1251, in the reign of Henry III, Rowland de Sutton married a daughter of the noted family of Lexington. John de Sutton was Lord of Malpas and Shocklech in 1329. There is record of many lands being given to John, s/o Richard de Sutton, by Edward III. Isabella de Sutton, after the death of her husband, Sir John de Sutton, in 1359, married Sir Richard de Dudley. Upon her death the estates of the combined families were inherited by her grandson, John Sutton. Among these estates was the famous Dudley Castle. —— The first of the Suttons of whom record can be found was William Sutton who came to Massachusetts in 1666, but it is believed by many authorities that he was of the second generation of the family to come to the Colonies. He was a Quaker and the holder of large tracts of land. His children were Alice, Thomas, Mary, John, Judah, Richard, Joseph (who died in early youth), Benjamin, Daniel, and Joseph. Many of these children of William Sutton settled in New Jersey. It is generally supposed that William had one or more brothers with him when he emigrated to "The New World", but the family was of such an adventurous disposition that its members seldom stayed in any one location long enough to be on record.

    Notes:

Robert Sutton was born in England, and before immigrating to America. He migrated over probably within a few years of his son George Sutton who came over in 1634. Note: No record of Robert having the middle name of “Ambrose” has been found.
    ——
George christened 27 Dec 1607 The alias "Baldock" originally seen on father Robert's profile comes from this christening showing Robert as "alias Baldock" or something similar. The original register image on findmypast.co.uk is clearly readable showing this alias. Interestingly, the christening is written twice, once with the alias and once without, 2 lines apart.

Robert married Mary AUSTEN on 13 Oct 1606 in Biddenden, Kent, England. Mary was born about 1585 in Kent, England; died on 8 Mar 1621 in Biddenden, Kent, England; was buried in unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Background on his family is given in NEHGR 65:322, 75:226, and 114:153.
    ——
Elder Nathaniel Tilden came from Tenterden in Kent, with his family, before 1628. He was chosen Ruling Elder of the first Church in Scituate 1634. His house lot was on Kent-street, the 3d. south of Greenfield lane. He had also lands at Long marsh: and lands also in 1640, on the east side of the North River, below Gravelly beach.
Nathaniel arrived in New England in 1634 in the ship Hercules, of Dover, with his wife and children (Joseph, Mary, Sarah, Judith, Lydia, Stephen, and Thomas), and the following, who came under the designation of 'servants:' Thomas Lapham, George Sutton, Edward Ford, Edward Jenkins, James Bennett, Sarah Couchman, and Mary Perien. The Rev. William Witherell came on this same boat.
Nathaniel Tilden was among the earliest of the 'Men of Kent' who established plantations at Satuit before 1628, others being Anthony Annable, Thomas Bird, Edward Foster, William Gillson, Henry Merritt, Henry Rowley, Nathaniel Tilden, and Deane says, 'perhaps others.'
Nathaniel was a Magistrate in Tenterden, and elected to the office of Mayor.
Elder Nath'l Tilden was the ancestor of nearly all the Tildens in Marshfield. He was one of three borothers, and they were called 'Men of Kent,' from England. He came to Scituate at that portion called 'Tow Mile' tract, now known as North Marshfield, in 1628. His farm extended both sides of North River, part of it being on 'Gravelly beach’.
Nathaniel came in the Hercules in 1635 from Sandwich, in Co. Kent, being one of an old family at Tenterden, near Cranbrook, in that shire, bringing wife Lydia, seven children and seven servants. He may have visited our country before and went home to bring his household; but it does not appear by any facts. He settled in Scituate. In May 1637, with his friend Hatherly, he was appointed by Plymouth Colony to settle the bounds between it and the Massachusetts Colony. He was ruling elder in the church and died 1641, the inventory being of 31 July, and his will of 25 May preceding in that year. It names his wife Lydia, perhaps daughter of Thomas Bourne of Marshfield, yet married in England to which he gives his home at Tenterden, all the seven children Joseph; Thomas, b. a. 1621; Mary, the w. of Thomas Lapham, m. 13 Mar. 1637; Sarah, the w. of George Sutton; Judith; Lydia; and Stephen; also two servants who should serve his eldest son..
    ——
All the children of Nathaniel and Lydia Tilden were born in England, five dying there prior to the family's departure. The children were Thomas, who died young; Mary, who married Thomas Lapham; Joseph, who died young; Sarah, who married George Sutton; Joseph, who married Alice or Elizabeth Twisden; Stephen, who died young; Thomas, who married Elizabeth (Bourne) Waterman; Judith, who married Abraham Preble; Winifred, who died young; Lydia, who died young; Lydia, who married Richard Garrett; and Stephen, who married Hannah Little. Mary and Sarah were married on the same day, 13 March 1636/37 (NEHGR 9:286), and their husbands were Tilden's servants. ??After his death, his widow Lydia married Timothy Hatherly. Elizabeth French shows in NEHGR 70:256 that Lydia (Huckstep) (Tilden) Hatherly was a cousin of Thomas Hatch, q.v., who also came to New England in the Hercules and settled at Scituate. ??Tilden was of the gentry and addressed as "Mr.," and he was one of the wealthier Scituate residents. He dated his will 25 May 1641, inventory 31 July 1641, and he named his wife Lydia and his children Stephen; Lydia; Joseph; Thomas; Judith; Mary, the wife of Thomas Lapham; and Sarah, the wife of George Sutton; and he also mentioned his two indentured servants, Edward Jenkins and Edward Tarte (MD 3:220).
    ——
Nathaniel Tilden‘s descendants flourished in America, such as the Hon Samuel Jones Tilden, who served as Governor of New York State and was a presidential candidate (Democrat) in 1875.
    ——
Register of St. Mildred's Church, Tenterden, Kent, England, 1583.
Nathaniell Tylden sonne of Thomas Tylden bapt ye 28th of July.

The Tylden (or Tilden) family represent a landholding family with origins in England in the Middle Ages. A branch of the family emigrated to the American colonies in the early 17th century and established the Tilden family line in America.
The Tilden families of America descend from John Tilden, a clothier of Benenden, born around 1400. His descendant, Nathaniel Tilden, sailed with his family (his wife Lydia, seven children and seven servants) in March 1634 on the Hercules, from Sandwich, Kent to Massachusetts Bay Colony. Nathaniel Tilden, the first name on the passenger list of the Hercules, had been mayor of Tenterden in 1622 and his immediate family had held similarly official roles in Tenterden and the surrounding community. Nathaniel Tilden was chosen ruling elder of the first church of Scituate, Massachusetts within a year after his arrival. His name is recorded in the first conveyance of land recorded in Scituate in 1634: "of all that land which I have of Goodman Byrd lying within the fence at the north end of the third cliffe, unto the land of Nathaniel Tilden."
The connection of the Tildens to the earliest days of settlement in New England are numerous. Nathaniel's brother Joseph, two years his junior, was one of the merchant adventurers of London who fitted out the Mayflower. Similarly Nathaniel Tilden's youngest son, Stephen married Hannah Little of Plymouth, Massachusetts, whose father had married the daughter of Richard Warren, a passenger on the Mayflower.

Nathaniel married Lydia Bourne HUCKSTEP on 13 Oct 1606 in Bethersden, Kent, England. Lydia (daughter of Stephen HUCKSTEP and Winnifred HATCH) was born about 1588 in Tenterden, Kent, England; died in 1672 in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts; was buried in unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
