• Obituary: Elizabeth "Betty" McCready HURRICANE, W.VA./ PITTSFIELD - Elizabeth "Betty" McCready, 83, of Hurricane, W.Va., formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday, April 8, 1996, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, W.Va., after a short illness. She was born in Millinocket and lived for many years in Pittsfield before moving to Hurricane. She was a retired medical assistant, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a participant at the John Henson Senior Center in Hurricane. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry McCready, and a son, Richard McCready. Survivors include a daughter, Anne Bowen of Milton, Fla.; a son, Michael McCready of Hurricane, W.Va.; a brother, Wilfred G. Conary of Gilead; a sister-in-law, Germaine Poirier of Norway; grandchildren, Heidi McCready of Cardville, Janet Collins of Milton, Fla., Brenda Melancon of Oscar, La., Jennifer Fox of Lakewood, Ohio, Cynthia Hayes of Louisville, Ky., Kevin McCready of Knoxsville, Tenn. and Susan McCready of Philadelphia, Pa.; ten great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Chapman Funeral Home in Hurricane, W.Va. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at the Funeral Chapel with Jody DeBias officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Norway, Me., at a later date.

Norway, Sept 20 - Funeral services were held, Thursday afternoon, for Capt Wilfred G Conary, from the home, on Lower Main street. Rev. Raymond Morgan, pastor of the Congregational church officiated. The American Legion, William Henry Stone Post, was in charge, and the Legion committal service was used at Pine Grove cemetery, where interment took place. There was a firing squad and taps. The bearers were Legionaires Harold A. Moore, Maurice E. Prince, Francis Carroll, Laurence H. Denison, Edward A. Luck, and David Klain. There was a great quantity of flowers.

Wilfred married Hazel Ernestine BUTTERS. Hazel was born on 17 Jul 1888; died on 23 Sep 1975. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

• Obituary: Thomas arrived at Piscataqua, Maine in July 1630 on the barque Warwick, returned to England in 1633, then returned to the colonies on the Pied Cow in 1634. Thomas was a planter, lumberman, and tavernkeeper. Thomas and Patience lived first at Strawbery Bank (Portsmouth), then on 6 Mar 1636/7 were called residents of 'Piscataqua' (Kittery Point), and finally of Newichawannock (South Berwick). They were of Saco in 1654. Thomas was disenfranchised [lost his right to vote] for entertaining Quakers in 1659. Evidence that Thomas and Patience may have been Quakers is seen in the courts 7 July 1663 when they were presented for "neglecting to come to the publique meeteing on the Lords day to heare the word preached for about the space of 3 Moenths". They were presented again for the same offense on 6 July 1675. In a long list of "those persons yt entertayned the Quakers, with the answers given in by them respectively" we find: "That Thomas Spencer pay as a fine to ye country for his entertayning the Quakers the somme of five pounds, & be disfranchised".
