    • Migration: 11 Nov 1620, “Mayflower”

    Notes:

JOHN ALDEN came from England in the Mayflower in 1620, but did not belong to the Leyden group. As Governor Bradford wrote, he "was hired as a cooper at South-Hampton, wher the ship victuled; and being a hopfull yong man, was much desired , but left to his owne liking to go or stay when he came he re; but he stayed and maryed here."

John was the youngest to sign the Mayflower Compact.

His wife was Priscilla Mullens, daughter of William and Alice Mullens, and they married about 1622. Mr. Bradford wrote of them in1650: "both living, and hath 11 children. And their eldest daughter is maried, and hath 5 children."

John died at his home in Duxbury September 22, 1687 "in a good old age," the last male survivor of those who came in the Mayflower and signed the compact in her cabin in 1620. He left no will and his third son, Jonathan, as administrator, made a final settlement with the family June 13, 1688, which was signed by the heirs but does not account for eleven children. Priscilla died before her husband.
    ——
Of the one hundred and two passengers aboard the Mayflower, half died the first winter, and the remainder represent twenty-three families "known to have left descendants." Thus everyone who claims John Alden as ancestor has in fact four Mayflower ancestors, John, his wife Priscilla, and her parents, William and Alice Mullins. The late Governor General Lewis E. Neff, through research in England and Holland had obtained names of children of Mrs. John Carver, of a daughter of John Turner, of some children of Bartholomew Allerton, of eight grandchildren of John Crackstone, and of nine children and some grandchildren of Moses Fletcher. None of these genealogical finds has yet resulted in locating present day descendants of these additional passengers and the official list continues to number twenty-three families. A number of members have proved descent from half or more of the passengers, but no one has yet proved descent from all twenty-three families.

John married Priscilla MULLINS in 1621 in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. Priscilla (daughter of William MULLINS and Alice MNU) was born about 1603 in Dorking, Surrey, England; died before 1687; was buried in Miles Standish Burial Grounds, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 15.  Priscilla MULLINS was born about 1603 in Dorking, Surrey, England (daughter of William MULLINS and Alice MNU); died before 1687; was buried in Miles Standish Burial Grounds, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

    Other Events:

    • Married Name: ALDEN
    • Immigrant?: Y
    • Mayflower Flag: Y
    • Migration: 11 Nov 1620, “Mayflower”

    Notes:

William Mullins, his wife Alice and son Joseph all died within months of arriving in the New World, along with their servant Robert Carter. Only their daughter Priscilla survived. William may have been the first of the family to die, probably on February 21, 1621. In his will, written on his deathbed, he mentioned “my man Robert” indicating Carter was still alive then. Per Stratton, Alice, her son Joseph and servant Robert Carter were all alive on April 5, 1621 when the Mayflower set sail on its return voyage to England, but all had died before the arrival of the ship Fortune in mid-November of that year.
