Notes: James W. Tibbetts was raised on a farm in Maine and attended a country school three months each year. He went to Wisonsin at the age of 22 and worked in the woods there for a year, and then went to St. Louis on a raft of lumber. He became ill and returned to his home and remained one year. In 1846 he located on a farm in Elk River, Minnesota, remaining there about 15 years in farming and lumbering. He aided in driving the Winnebago and Sioux Indians from that part of the country and did considerable Indian fighting in Minnesota and Montana. On August 13, 1862 he enlisted in Company A, Eighth Minnesota Regiment, and was sent to the plains in Dakota and Montana. He spent two and one-half years on the frontier, and in September, 1864 was sent to the South. He was in several engagements and was discharged July 11, 1865. He returned to his home in Minnesota and resided there until 1871, when he moved to Aitkin County, bringing the first white family to the county. He traveled to Brainerd by stage and then by rail to Aitkin County. James married Hannah Maria HEATH in 1852 in Aitkin, Aitkin, Minnesota. Notes: He was a graduate of the academy at Belfast, Maine. He was a farmer, a school teacher, and a literary man of considerable note. He served as a musician in the War of 1812. In the 1850 census record for Brownville, he was listed as Isaac L. Tibbetts, a farmer with real estate worth $1200. The rest of the family names proved it waas Jessie L. Tibbetts, converted his father Nathaniel, who had been a Baptist. They had a brick making area on the river so it has been told. In October 25, 1835, Jessie was a Justice of the Peace in New Sharon and performed marriages, New Sharon town records. Therefore, the move was between 1835 and 1840. Jesse married Christiana Havilla DUNTON on 9 Apr 1818 in New Sharon, Franklin, Maine.
