Mary Chilton is said to be the first woman to step ashore from theMayflower in 1620. At thirteen Mary Chilton was thus left an orphan atPlymouth. No record reveals with whom she spent the next few years, butperhaps for at least a part of the time she was member of either theAlden or the Standish household; in the 1623 land division "Marie"Chilton received her share (undoubtedlly three acres---one for herselfand one for each parent) between the shares of John Alden and MylesStandish. By the time of the cattle division of May 1627, Mary hadmarried John Winslow, and the couple were included with John Shaw's group.
